The Armed Forces Covenant is a commitment that recognizes and acknowledges the importance of treating those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, as well as their families, with fairness and respect in the communities, economy, and society they dedicate their lives to. It is based on two fundamental principles:
- Individuals who serve in the Armed Forces, whether they are Regular or Reserve personnel, those who have served in the past, and their families, should not face any disadvantages compared to other citizens when it comes to accessing public and commercial services.
- Certain cases require special consideration, particularly for those who have made significant sacrifices such as the injured and the bereaved.
The Covenant aims to ensure that members of the Armed Forces community have equal access to government and commercial services and products, just like any other citizen. This support encompasses various areas, including healthcare, education and childcare, housing and accommodation, employment, and financial services.
The Covenant Legal Duty is a legal requirement imposed on specific public entities (such as local authorities, governing bodies of select state schools, various NHS bodies, and other organizations) to consider and uphold the principles outlined in the Armed Forces Covenant while performing certain responsibilities related to healthcare, education, and housing. This obligation has been effective since November 2022.
